So far in this course the only rendering technique we’ve looked at is rasterization where geometry is projected in a way that is appropriate for viewing on a 2D plane, and then a simple material model is used to determine the shading. However this method trades realism for speed, and historically has not been sufficient to render scenes realistically enough for film and VFX. This is where ray tracing comes in and allows us to simulate the behaviour of light in a far more realistic way.
In this lecture, we discuss recursive ray tracing and examine how we can easily achieve shadows, reflection, and refraction using the technique.
