Which PhD leads to the best job opportunities?
This may sound presumptuous, but it is the one that excites you the most. Jobs in academia and industry for PhD’s are highly competitive, regardless of your field. If you Gina a field that you love, you will invest highly and work hard because it is your calling. That will stand you in good stead for job opportunities.
This is the wrong way to look at a Ph.D. A Ph.D. is training for doing research. A Ph.D. is never a guarantee for the best job opportunities, actually it may severely limit your scope of your job search, since you may be considered overqualified.
Next, it depends on where you plan to work and the political climate. Are you going to be a native, a “highly desired” immigrant, or a “a member of a foe state”? A Ph.D. takes 3–6 years to complete and during that time you could be making real money.
I have no crystal balls. These days, many with a Ph.D. in physics find more jobs in Wall Street than in physics. For now, these areas are hot:
AI - Machine learning.
Data science.
CS in general.
But it is all about supply and demand, and the supply for the above seems to be increasing very fast.
The only doctorate degree that leads to a good job opportunity is a medical doctor. All other Phd’s the best you can do with them is work for someone else or teach. I don’t look at teaching as a good job opportunity unless you are passionate about teaching.
