What is the best job for an electrical engineer?
It is a very difficult as well as an important question for all of us who are from electrical or some other background.
To talk about the best job I should say every individual has a different requirement and based on that the definition of best job varies person to person. However, there will be few common things which probably remain there in everyone’s requirement list.
We all probably require a fat pay cheque, 5 days week, duty limited within office hours only, job satisfaction, good HR policy, good hike at the end of the year etc. Now to be very frank, I think no job on earth can give you all these together. So one need to do compromise on things to get something more out of it.
If we talk about the average electrical engineer’s life, then a Navaratna PSUs probably is the best choice over time. The pay is comparable with MNCs and life is far better than MNCs.
If your expectation from life is more than average then you need to work for MNCs who are having origin outside India. But this will take your life from you. French MNCs are probably the best as far as better work place is concerned.
But, again, we do not know where life will take us. Sometimes, it is better to move with the life as it is taking us in the journey.
Thanks for asking.
The best job profile is the one that bests matches your interests and your desired level of responsibility.
If you are looking at a job profile, you have probably already narrowed down the market or industry you are interested in. This could range from microelectronics to utility engineering. For now, we can rule out that you’ve already narrowed things down by interest. If that is the case, consider the following:
1. What will your supervisor be like? Are they willing to mentor you and help you learn and grow as a professional? Will you enjoy working with them? Sadly, engineers as a group tend to lean more towards technical ability and may not have developed their softer people skills.
2. What is the company culture like? Will you be a good fit with the cultural norms of the company? This can be anything from work/life balance to the way they approach solving problems. You may want to ask questions about their values and activities that help define the company.
3. What level of responsibility will you have? Perhaps you are looking for a leadership role. Maybe you are not ready for that and you want to develop engineering skills first. Be sure to look closely at how much training and leadership to junior staff you may be asked to perform. Many engineers firms are “flat” in their organizational structure. That is, one owner or principal engineer and everyone else just being an “engineer”. They may assume that if you have a certain number of years of experience, you will be providing some leadership capacity. The title will still say engineer so pay attention to the language in the job description.
4. Look out for the amount of travel required. Some engineer firms require a lot. Some have no travel requirements at all. Some are flexible. Some are very rigid about the amount they expect.
Electrical engineering is a vast subject. Jobs depend upon what is your specialization.
Power System: PSU.
Power Electronics: private.
Real world requires command over multiple concepts. You should be able to design and make an inverter (power electronics), control it in real time (embedded), design a working control (control system), implement it (digital electronics and control), finally all this for a specific application (motor, grid connected power supply, etc).
