What is the best job for a lazy person?
As many people suggested, software is a great area for a lazy person. One of the most obvious reasons is that lazy people look for simpler, easier solutions before just jumping in. Unlike in many areas of life, this is hugely advantageous in software as simpler code that does the same function is much more valuable than more complex code that accomplishes the same function.
Another advantage of being lazy as a software engineer is when you are lazy you are more likely to try and find someone else that has solved the problem and use their code. This applies both to code internally and code from external sources. This code is more likely to be already debugged and have additional benefits related to scalability, etc. Another point for the lazy software engineer.
I would actually say that applying software skills in another area that is not strong in software is an even better option if you're truly lazy. In many areas most people don't realize what can be done through automation. I've known 3 or 4 people that took a job, such as finance or accounts receivable, automated the entire job, and then basically showed up and collected a check. They had the appearance of doing a lot of work, but all of them were working less than 4 hours/week. On a $/hour basis, they were the highest paid people I knew.
Ha! I love this question.
The truth is that “lazy” people tend to be highly efficient. There was a joke that went something to the effect of this. There was a lazy Army Private who was always trying to get out of work. His Sargeant always assigned him the toughest jobs to get done. The Private finally went up and told the Sargeant, “Look, you know I’m lazy, why don’t you give me a break?” The Sargent explained, “Private, I know you’re lazy. That is why I can always count on you to find the most efficient way to get something done!”
If you are truly lazy, then you two choices; find something with low skills (receptionist? call center operator?) or find something with high skilss (software developer) so you only have to work a few hours and more a ton of money. Heck, people are getting paid to play video games now days! Twitch anyone?
Being lazy doesn’t mean you can’t be a valuable asset to a company.
I'd say it depends on what "lazy person" means to you. Is it that you are not a morning person and prefer to start your activity at 10 am or even late in the evening, is it the number of hours you are willing to work in a day, or the number of days that you'd want to work for, how far from home would you be willing to travel...
Make sure you're not mistaking lack of motivation or passion with laziness. There has to be something you enjoy doing or that you're truly passionate about even if you'll do it for 4 hours a week.
In terms of types of work, you can get to a stage where you could live on residual income but even in such a cases some work has to be involved, at least for a while, to get to that income. A home-based project or job might also help. Maybe you would enjoy your work more if you could work from anywhere you like, rather than in an cubicle or sitting in front of a desk 8 hours a day. Part time or casual roles that don't include too many hours of work or travelling. If you prefer to sit at a desk rather than travel or meet people, internet based projects can be a real good choice. You could also try developing a product or a service that you could sell online and won't involved to much travelling, although it's possible that for start it will help your business to lift off it you met with some people or took part in some groups.
Before anything else though, decide what you like to do, what is it that you're really good at or that you enjoy doing even for one or two hours a day. What are your best skills and what do you see yourself doing. Maybe talk to a career counselor who will help you know your skills, abilities, your values, set career goals and follow them in a way suited for you. From there decide how many hours you're willing to work, how far will be open to travel, if you are a morning person or not, what's that time of the day when you're at your best level of energy. Hope this helps.
