In this module, we consider whether syntax has an effect on thought, focusing especially on: (i) how the order of the information given in sentences can affect thought, (ii) a study involving Chinese, Japanese and English speakers, that suggests that Japanese speakers use more cognitive resources in retaining background information, as the background usually comes first in their sentence structures, (iii) the two types of sentences: transitive, which have both a subject and an object, and intransitive, which have only a subject, (iv) the case of accidental and deliberate actions in Spanish, where intention determines whether a sentence is transitive or intransitive, and (v) studies comparing Spanish and English speakers’ assignment of blame for accidents.
