In this lecture, we think about whether Freudian psychoanalysis is still relevant today, focusing in particular on: (i) the contrasting media coverage of Freud’s work, even today; (ii) the relevance of psychoanalysis in the modern world of biochemical intervention; (iii) An Outline of Psychoanalysis, published a year after Freud’s death; (iv) Freud’s support of biochemical interventions, if they work for the individual patient; (v) James H. Fallon as a neuroscientist who believed in genetic determinism; (vi) Fallon’s study on psychopaths, which he proposed to identify a ‘psychopathic brain structure’; (vii) Fallon’s application of his research to Alzheimer’s disease; (viii) Fallon’s realisation that he had the brain structure of a psychopath, despite not being one; (ix) the recognition, framed with Freudian psychoanalysis, that our personality is not simply genetically determined, but takes shape through our interactions with a concrete social environment.
