Does hiding WiFi SSIDs make a network more secure?
Hiding your WiFi SSIDs does not provide any added security to your home network.
Even though your WiFi networks won’t be broadcast to devices in the area, they can still be detected by WiFi analyzer software. This software is widely available on the internet and free to use.
In addition to your hidden WiFi networks still being detectable, a network that’s hidden might actually have more appeal to hackers. In other words, hackers may be more likely to try to access a wireless network if they know it has been hidden. The network being hidden might mean that there’s something valuable on it.
So rather than hiding the SSIDs of your home network, you should take the following 4 actions to better secure your home network:
-Ensure your router is using the strongest available encryption settings
-Create strong, unique passwords for your WiFi networks
-Create a strong, unique password for accessing your router’s settings
-Be mindful of the wireless signals from your router extending beyond the boundaries of your home
In performing the 4 steps above, your home network will be much more secure than if you were to hide the SSIDs of your networks.
