How to determine if installing more RAM will improve your computer’s performance
If your computer is performing really slowly when you try to multitask with it, you may benefit from adding more RAM to the device.
Log in to your computer and access the Task Manager. The Task Manager will tell you the current memory utilization of your computer at any given point in time. If the memory utilization of your system is high and your computer is sluggish, you will likely benefit from upgrading your RAM.
How to upgrade your computer’s RAM
In order to upgrade your computer’s RAM, you first need to buy a RAM stick that is compatible with your computer. You can find this information online by searching for the technical specifications of your computer. In particular, you will want to make sure that the RAM memory technology (e.g. DDR4), capacity (in GB), and memory speed (in MHz) all match what your computer can handle.
One important note is that the computer needs to be powered off before you begin the RAM stick installation.
Once you have the RAM stick you need, you will need to take the bottom panel off of your computer (if you have a laptop) by unscrewing the screws that secure the panel to the rest of the laptop. You may also have to remove the disk drive of the system to access more screws that hold the back panel to the rest of the computer. This will give you access to the internal components of the system.
You will then need to either install the RAM stick into an open RAM slot in the computer, or remove an existing RAM stick and replace it with a higher-capacity one.
Once the RAM stick is installed, you can reassemble the computer in the reverse order that you followed to get access to its internal components.
Lastly, you will want to power the computer on and ensure the system recognizes the RAM upgrade you performed.
