What is a modem?
Your modem is an essential part of your home network. Without one, the devices in your home wouldn’t be able to access the internet.
In simple terms, your modem allows your devices to use the internet connection that’s provided by your internet servicer provider (ISP).
Another way to think about your modem is to treat it like a translator. It takes the signals that are being sent to your home from your ISP and translates them into information signals that your devices can understand.
In most cases, signals that are sent from your ISP to your home will be in the form of analog signals. This is the case for anyone with a cable internet plan. If you have a fiber internet plan, the signals that are sent to your home will be in the form of pulses of light.
In either case, your devices don’t understand these signals. That’s because computers communicate in binary (or digital) code. Your modem helps solve this problem by translating the analog/light signals into digital code for your devices to understand.
The same thing happens when your devices send requests to the internet. Your modem translates the digital code they send into analog/light signals so the data can be sent to your ISP for processing.
This process is what allows your devices to send requests to the internet and receive responses to those requests. Without a modem, they wouldn’t be able to do this.
That’s why a modem is an essential part of any home network.
