Different types of modems
There are three types of modems you’ll see being used today:
--Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modems: DSL modems use phone lines to communicate with the internet. They can support internet speeds up to around 100 megabits per second (Mbps).
--Cable modems: cable modems use coaxial cables to communicate with the internet. These are the same cables that are used to provide your home with cable television. Cable modems can support internet speeds greater than 500 megabits per second (Mbps).
--Fiber optic modems: fiber modems use fiber optic cables to communicate with the internet. Fiber optic cables uses pulses of light to send and receive data, which is must faster than the electronic pulses that DSL and cable modems use to transfer data. Fiber modems can support internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), or 1,000 Mbps.
How to tell what type of modem you have
The easiest way to tell what type of modem you have is by looking at the sticker on the physical device. Your modem should have a sticker on it (usually on the bottom of the device) that will detail what type of modem it is.
Another alternative here is to look at the Owner’s Manual for your modem. The manual will identify what type of modem it is.
If all else fails, you can look at the back of the device to determine how it connects to the internet. If the modem connects to the internet with a phone cable, it’s a DSL modem. If it connects to the internet with a coaxial cable, that means it’s a cable modem. If it has a fiber optic cable connection to the internet, it is a fiber optic modem.
