Reasons to Save (or Destroy) Plants
Knowing when to treat or pull a plant is huge, and it's especially important towards the end of the season. Let's talk through it!
These tomatoes are looking pretty rough. They've provided me with hundreds of tomatoes over the last several months, so should I pull them, or do they have more to give?
Some leaves, especially those that are lower, are going to die. That's okay and just a part of the life cycle of the plant. We even see new growth right alongside those dead branches.
We also see the effects of some diseases. As the plant ages and the days get shorter, those can start to take over a plant more. At this point, I know this plant really isn't going to thrive and give a whole lot more fruit.
One big consideration is if you need the space or not to grow plants in the upcoming months. I could leave this here if I really want to, but I have to know it's not going to give nearly as much fruit as it has been. For tomatoes, I really only overwinter cherries or other small varieties.
The cool thing about overwintering is that your plants will have a head start next year and put out spring growth right away.
