How We Approach Pest Management At Our Farm
Gardening isn't always Instagram-worthy. We've had cucumber beetles here on the farm, and this year was the worst we've had yet.
As a certified organic farm, we've made a commitment to rely on natural solutions. We know some pests are just going to happen, and we're okay with some damage. This year is another beast, though.
These tomatillos had a rough start, but the weaker plants haven't been able to stand up against the beetles this year. So what do we thinking about in situations like this?
First, ask yourself if the plant is save-able. If it is, will the harvests be worth using a treatment?
In this case, we have some decisions to make. We probably aren't going to get much off of these tomatillo plant. If we rip the plants up now, we can prevent the beetles from spreading to our other crops too.
There's no single approach for pest management that will work in all situations. It's a very case-by-case basis, but some things that can help with cucumber beetles are:
Mulch
Row cover
Plant appropriately
Surround
Sticky traps
These are all way to avoid using chemicals of any kind in your garden.
