Tips for Growing Snapdragons for Warm Climates Like Zones 9 & 10
Welcome back out to Ramona! This farm is where we do a lot of our seed production, and I want to talk to you about some really cool flowers that we're trialing this year.
A lot of flower growing advice out there doesn't really apply to zones 9 and 10, so I'm excited to get better at growing flowers and pass that info along to you! I've fallen in love with flowers so much the last couple of years, and snapdragons are some of my favorites.

I'm a veggie grower, but flowers have really grown on me. Because we're out in Ramona, we get warmer temps out here, so it's also been fun to learn how to grow in the summer. We started these in the winter, and we'll be setting up shade cloth in these really hot months of the year. As a bonus side effect, the dip in sunlight also tells the plants to grow longer.
HOW TO GROW SNAPDRAGONS
They are easy to start from seed, and you can get all kinds of varieties. We've chosen hybrids for their colors and also other properties like heat-tolerance.
Because the seeds are so small, we prefer to start them in cells. After I transplanted them out into the garden, I used plastic for weed control, but that may not be necessary.
They're gorgeous flowers, and the pollinators really like them. Bees, especially the big bumble bees, like to crawl inside. Pollinators love them, but you will too.
If you're growing to enjoy them as cutflowers, consider using netting to hold the stems in place. This should be done before the plant reaches that height so you don't have to wrestle it on. It should also be as tight as possible.
We fertilize when we plant them, one when they're starting to bloom, and one more later if needed. We also water regularly, so these are on irrigation. We don't want the plants to be stressed at all.
When it comes time to harvest, I like to go down the branch as far as possible. This will encourage the plant to give me more of those which are easier to use in arrangements. I also recommend harvesting in the morning and getting the cuttings into water right away. I like to leave about a third of the blooms closed because they'll still open up while in the vase.
