Dvar Torah Parshat Chukat: The Pure Become Impure. The Impure Become Pure. The Law of the Red Heifer
In Parshat Chukat (Chukas) we learn about the mysterious law concerning the red heifer. It is the ultimate illogical and unexplainable law of the Torah. The purpose of the red heifer is to purify those who have come into contact with the dead. This includes all of us today!
First a red heifer completely free of any other colour hair, and upon which yoke has ever come, is slaughtered. Its blood is sprinkled upon the Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting) and its skin, flesh, blood and entrails are burned. The Kohein take a piece of cedar wood, some hyssop and crimson wool and throws it into the burning cow.
The Kohein and everyone involved in the process become impure and must immerse themselves in a Mikvah. They must also immerse their garments. They wait until evening and become pure.
A person who has come into contact with a corpse must have these ashes sprinkled upon him/her in order to become pure. Once the ashes are prepared, those ashes are sprinkled and the person becomes ritually pure again!
The process is simple. But it is quite odd. Those who prepare the mixture become impure through doing so, whereas the impure (due to the corpse) become pure when the ashes are sprinkled on them. The pure become impure while the impure become pure! It is a decree of the Torah -- a totally illogical law.
But what can we learn from the strange events that take place here so that we can implement something into our own lives through this story? How can we grow from the lesson that is taught regarding the Parah Adumah -- the red heifer?
