The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) was intended to reclaim Jerusalem from Muslim control but disastrously diverted to Constantinople due to financial difficulties and political intrigue. The crusaders, unable to pay the Venetians for transport, first sacked the Christian city of Zara. They were then enticed by Byzantine prince Alexios Angelos to help him reclaim the throne in exchange for financial support. In 1204, after tensions rose, the crusaders besieged and brutally sacked Constantinople, establishing the short-lived Latin Empire. This event severely weakened the Byzantine Empire, deepened the schism between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, and shifted the focus of the Crusades from religious goals to political and economic ones. The Fourth Crusade is remembered for its catastrophic impact on Byzantine civilization and the Christian world.
