The Livonian Crusade (1198–1290) was a series of military campaigns undertaken by Christian powers from the Holy Roman Empire and Scandinavia to convert and conquer the pagan territories of the Baltic region, particularly in present-day Latvia and Estonia. Initiated by Pope Innocent III and led by the German Knights of the Sword, the crusade aimed to bring the Baltic pagans under Christian rule and integrate them into the Western European sphere. Over the course of nearly a century, the campaigns involved numerous battles and sieges, leading to the gradual subjugation of the native Livonians, Estonians, and other Baltic tribes. The most notable events include the Siege of Riga in 1209 and the Battle of Saule in 1236. By 1290, the Livonian Crusade had largely succeeded in its mission, with the region becoming part of the expanding Christian states and establishing a lasting impact on the Baltic region’s cultural and political landscape.
