This Lightroom Classic edit of Rainbow Falls in Watkins Glen State Park shares an approach to raw, high contrast landscape shots that initially look nothing like the scene you saw with your eyes. This is a magical scene, and it deserved spending some time both finding the perfect spots, but waiting for a time to minimize the number of people who would have to be removed in software. Fortunately, Lightroom’s new AI removal tool does an incredible job with this.
This is an in-depth discussion (about 18 min. long) of the tools and thought process used to create the feeling of the place. When I arrived at the falls, I felt like I was looking at a spot in Rivendell - the home of the Elves in Lord of the Rings!
Due to the extreme contrast of the scene, I had to be careful to protect the highlights of the falling waters, so the raw file looked dark and uninteresting. After we get through with the edit, I ended up with an image that is going to be sent to Bay Photo for a print on Fujiflex material - this will be hanging in my house!
