Having a monitor that is producing accurate color and brightness is the first and most important step for anyone who wants great and consistent color prints. If you are doing your own editing with software like Lightroom and Photoshop, all of the edits you make are based on what you see on your screen - but if your screen is not showing you the true colors and brightness, then all of your edits are simply guesswork.

In order to know that your monitor is showing you the most accurate color it is capable of, you need to calibrate it.

I have been teaching digital color workflow for twenty years and you may have seen me do videos for X-Rite and more recently Calibrite. Calibrite has partnered with X-Rite, who remains the manufacturer of all Calibrite gear.
I recently got my hands on their newest monitor calibrator - the Display123 - and I think it might just be the best choice for most photographers, at least those using LCD monitors. The new software is really plug and play. You simply connect the device to a USB port, hang it on your monitor, set the brightness and off it goes. It measures color, contrast and brightness and automatically implements the new color profile in your operating system.
For those using Mini LED, OLED and XDR Monitors, you should use their new High Luminance sensor - the Display Pro HL. Both devices use the same software, but when the software recognizes which device is plugged in, different options and capabilities and implemented.

It's’ simple to do and will pay off in consistently great photo prints both from your lab and from your own inkjet printers. No more wasted paper and ink, and consistently great prints from your lab. To make this happen, the first is calibrating your monitor. Join me and see how easy it can be!
