Why moms should encourage rough and tumble play
What does rough and tumble play have to do with your ability to dance? Find out here.
Obviously rough and tumble play has inherent risk and it must have some boundaries as to what is acceptable behavior. Does this mean that our children should never be in risky situation? Where do we draw the line?
Jordan argues that absolutely “no rough and tumble play”, although it seems like the safest route (which is why it is illegal in all day-care facility’s, and fueled (rightly so) by their fear of being sued if a child where to get hurt), is very unhealthy for children, especially young boys.
Jordan Lists several benefits of letting your children rough and tumble play.
He says it teaches them:
• Proper development of prefrontal cortex
• Ability to become social and
• To play well with others.
• Aware of the limits of their bodies
• The limits of other people’s bodies.
• Knowing what is painful and what isn’t.
• Ability to say “no” when being pushed past limits.
• The dance of play
• Fluency for reciprocal action (dancing)
• Ability to engage in mutually beneficial action with another person. (working with others)
Here are some of the negative consequences he lays out that are a result of rough and tumble play being withheld from children:
• Improper development of prefrontal cortex.
• Impaired ability to become social
• “Disembodied blobs”
• No finesse
• Impulsivity
• Restlessness
We all tend to default to the “safest” decision, because it has immediate and obvious benefits.( I quarantined my self for 2 weeks during because I believed I was exposed to COVID patient and did not want to risk giving it to my wife or 2 young children even though the risks was EXTREAMLY LOW)
The negative consequences of our decisions do not tend to show up until much later down the road and can have devastating lasting effects we could not have identified when making the decision.
One more short note: We are all in this together.
Now is not the time to blame those who (I believe had good intentions) made these decisions. Now is the time to spread this information to those you believe it will be helpful, and to use this information as fuel for productive conversations that will benefit all of mankind.
In the game of life, we have no other choice but to be “all in”, lets be “all in” together!
If you have more information on this topic please do not hesitate to leave it in the comments below. This is an important discussion that is not being had at this current time.
