This is what is meant when someone says we are “theological beings”. We must have an aim or there would be no reason to act. This is why we need both a valuable goal and to approach is systematically.
Here Jordan differentiates the two sources of positive emotion and explains that if we do not have a valuable goal then we cannot sustain any form of positive emotion.
He explains that with satiation, reaching a predetermined goal(when you eat), you do receive positive emotions in the forms of dopamine. He says that this has its own problems because after you are full you blow up the frame that you where operating in (the frame that tells you how to act in the world).
He explains to have lasting motivation and to move forward we need to specify a valuable goal. And begin making small steps towards that goal.
This why we cannot just get rid of goals, we need to use them as our north star, then put the system in place so that we can break the valuable goal down into small steps. Each small step delivers the dopamine we need to keep moving one small step at a time.
Here is how you can put this into action today.
You can begin where you are right now and ask yourself “what is the highest good I can conceive of right now? Then aim towards that, but as you approach your goal, have the humility to know when to change that north star to something higher!
