Auto Fill Date Series by Day
First, let's look at how to auto-fill a date series by day. Suppose you have the date 1st of January 2024 in cell A1 and you want to fill it down to create a series of consecutive days until 31st of December 2024.
Basic Method: Select cell A1 and drag the fill handle down until you reach the date 31st of December 2024. However, this is not practical for large volumes of data.
Advanced Method:
Select cell A1 and go to the Home tab.
Under the Editing group, select the dropdown of the Fill option, then click on Series.
In the Fill Series dialog box, select Columns as we need the dates in a column. Choose Date as the series type and Day as the date unit. Set the step value to 1 to include every day.
Set the stop value to 31st December 2024 (ensure the format matches your start date).
Click OK. All the dates within the range will appear in column A.
Auto Fill Date Series with Weekdays
Next, let's fill a date series with only weekdays.
Example: Suppose you have '01/01/2024' in cell C1 and you want to fill down to create a series that includes only weekdays in January.
Select cell C1 and drag the fill handle down to cell C31. Click on the Auto Fill Options button and select Fill Weekdays.
Alternatively, go to the Fill Series dialog box. Select Columns as the series, Date as the type, and Weekday as the date unit. Keep the step value as 1 and set the stop value as 31st January 2024. Click OK. Excel fills the series with only weekdays, skipping weekends.
Auto Fill Date Series by Month
Now, let's fill a date series by month.
Example: Suppose you have '01/01/2024' in cell E1 and you want to fill down to create a series of dates by month in 2024.
Select cell E1 and drag the fill handle down to cell E12. Click on the Auto Fill Options button and select Fill Months.
Alternatively, go to the Fill Series dialog box. Select Columns as the series, Date as the type, and Month as the date unit. Change the step value to 2 to get dates every two months, set the stop value as 31st December 2024, and click OK.
Auto Fill Date Series by Year
Finally, let's create a date range for the coming 10 years starting from 1st of January 2024.
Example: Suppose you want to fill the series in column G.
Use the fill handle method or the Fill Series dialog box.
Set the step value to 2 and the stop value to 1st January 2033.
