This being the 4th Father's Day since my dad passed away, I wanted to share a tale about how much he wasn't into video games, until the moment he was.
When the Wii came out in 2006, it changed the gaming landscape. The games were fun, the motion controls were intuitive, and overall it was just a great system for casual enthusiasts. I had picked up a Wii on Launch Day and brought it with me over the holidays to my brother and sister-in-law's for Christmas. No one knew what to make of it when I pulled it from my bag, and then Wii Sports started. From that moment everyone in the room was intrigued. My aunt had been a successful amateur bowler and took right to it. My older brother also thought it was great. The thing I didn't expect was for my non-gaming dad to become absolutely enthralled with it.
A few years later I got a call from my stepmother. It seemed that my dad couldn't shut up about the Wii and that she wanted to get him one for Christmas. I helped her get the information she needed, the model information, and found the best deal I could. The issue? My dad was a moron when it came to electronics and had no idea how to connect the Wii to their television, so it sat in a closet until I could travel to Florida for a visit. I finally got down there in 2013 to help him get it all connected and ready to go. I don't know how much they played it, but I do know that they did.
When we lost my dad in 2019, it was a huge shock. He was getting ready for his day when he just had a massive heart attack. He had felt something wasn't right and asked my stepmother to bring him some aspirin. By the time she got it for him, he was already gone. I take solace in the fact that he did go quickly, he never had a loss of quality of life, he never had a long-term hospitalization, he just... passed. I am also thankful that he never had to deal with the pandemic, he was such a social butterfly I think social distancing would have driven him bonkers. I'm also thankful that my stepmother saved the Wii for me to grab, along with other items. It didn't mean much to anyone else, but it was one of those times when my dad and I shared an interest.
