In the United States, the first Monday of September is set aside for Labor Day, a day to celebrate the hard working individuals everywhere. While a different sort of labor, sometimes video games can be laborious, taxing, or a challenge. They can also be the result of a labor of love as well. Getting certain collections can take a lot of work or labor. Let’s take a look at three things in video games that I find a labor, a labor of love, a labor to play, and a labor to complete.
Labor of Love:
Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World
I have said many times that Super Mario World is my favorite video game of all time, but Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World is my favorite cartridge of all time. It takes my favorite game and pairs it up beautifully with remastered 16-bit versions of the original 3 Super Mario Bros games for an epic compilation. All of the character models have been updated, influenced and derived from the Super Mario World artwork, and it’s such a love letter to the fans. Everything about this collection is practically perfect, and you can see and feel the love that went into this cartridge, and it is definitely the result of a labor of love.
Laborious to Complete:
Star Wars: Jedi Survivor
I was really excited after Fallen Order for a sequel, but Jedi Survivor just lacked the cohesive story that the original had. Not only that but it punished players in certain areas to the point I found myself reducing the difficulty just to continue the story. The original game felt more grounded as well, we met Cal and journeyed with him along his path as he discovered his connection to the Force. In the second game it just…. you lost the companions, it was more solo, key characters from the first game died worthless deaths, and the ending was terrible. I wanted to finish the story, but this wasn’t the conclusion I wanted.
Labor to Collect:
Complete Rock Man Famicom Game Collection
Let’s be honest, with the NES there are so many great franchises. Mega Man is one of the best, but while I like it I’m not an Uber fan. I wanted to own all the games in the series, and I have a number for the NES, but I wasn’t going to pay what some of the games are going for. The solution? Collect the complete Famicom series, it’s much less expensive! Between different conventions and ordering from Japan Retro Direct, I was able to complete the set for a fraction of what the US Set costs.
