I have long stated that I have not been a fan of the original Xbox controller, whether we are talking about the Duke or the S controller. This is perhaps the biggest reason why I was excited when Retro Fighters informed me that they were developing a new controller for the Xbox and that it was going to be wireless. Let's take a quick look at the new Hunter Wireless 2.4 GHz controller from Retro Fighters for the original Xbox, along with the PC and Switch.

The ergonomics have been completely revamped compared to any of the previous Microsoft Xbox controllers. Sharing more with the Retro Fighters Defender and Brawler64, the analog sticks and button placements have been optimized to fit a modern gamer's sensibility. Everything that you need is here, including the black and white face buttons which are also duplicated in a pair of shoulder buttons.
A big upgrade is the inclusion of wireless 2.4 gigahertz technology. The Hunter includes both dongles for the original Xbox and USB. You can effortlessly swap between the two, meaning you could be playing on the original Xbox One moment and then playing Xbox Live or Game Pass on your PC the next.
One of the big trends in recent years has been the move away from potentiometers and toward hall effect sensors for analog sticks. Hall effect sensors have a reputation for being much more accurate and much more durable compared to traditional potentiometers.
The overall fit, feel, and polish of the Retro Fighters Hunter controller is nothing sort of phenomenal. Having tested early prototypes, I'm glad to have a final production sample in my hands to test. Make sure you check out our full-blown review to see the Hunter wireless controller actually in use.
