How to show hidden files on Mac

On macs that run macOS Sierra or higher, all you need to do is just press Command-Shift-PERIOD.

To hide the files again, press the same key shortcut.

On older macs, however, things are a little more difficult.

Open Terminal found in Finder - Applications - Utilities
In Terminal, paste the following line: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles true

Press return

Hold the ‘Option’ key, then right click on the Finder icon in the dock and click Relaunch.

This will show all hidden files. To hide them again, follow the same steps but replace the Terminal command with the following line:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles false
