We recently went to visit one of our early donor bottle distilleries, Samuel Berton Distilling in Labadie, Missouri. What had already seemed like good people, turned out to be great people. Like their spirits, the folks there are inviting, warm, and genuine through and through. Since we've been on a gin kick, we decided to start circling back to Samuel Berton with their gin. Our first bottle a few years ago left us confused and scratching our heads. We flat didn't enjoy it, although we understood how for the folks who dislike juniper notes would finally have a bottle to fill their glass. That said, they told the recipe had changed and what used to be fairly heavy on the licorice front, is now just a misting. We should also say that after dipping into several sipping gins, the licorice flavor from the first bottle wasn't as off-putting as it was when we first had it. However, the recipe change was a wise choice in our opinion. The new bottle is incredibly smooth. Lemon citrus notes dance delicately on the mustier all spice and licorice hints. Almost like a watered down lemonade, or what you might find in an Irish whiskey on the rocks that has been sitting for a while. This is one easy sipping bottle, and for that we are thankful. Cheers!

You can call us Taste Buds or the Two Guys behind the counter, it doesn't matter to us. We are two guys from Missouri doing a Craft Beer Review and a Whiskey Review (or Whisky Review depending where you are from) with a drive to always Try Something New. We won't drive you crazy with snobby tasting notes that no one else will understand, just a general idea of what the beer or food tastes like. We want YOU to join us in trying exciting new things to open our minds, and pallets, to something different. So join Chris Horn and Lyal Strickland as we foray into some suds and grains and stumble all over ourselves trying to sound smarter than they really are. Some of the things we love to try are Scotch, Bourbon, Rum, Tequila, wine, and craft beer of all kinds. We argue between Stouts and Porters, IPA and Sour, Farmhouse and Lager. I'm sure there isn't anything we won't disagree about except that we like to try new stuff.
