How is Industry Uncertainty Impacting MEMS Commercialization: Results of the Annual MEMS Industry Commercialization Report Card Study

Annually, and since 1998, Roger Grace Associates has conducted the MEMS Industry Commercialization Report Card Study. Its purpose has been to track and monitor the progress (or lack thereof) of the MEMS industry in its efforts to successfully commercialize the technology. It offers insightful recommendations and guidance for the adopting of strategies to best accelerate commercialization success. The 2021 Report Card provides not only the results vis-à-vis letter grades on each of the Report Card’s 14 subjects (a.k.a. critical success factors) but additionally a summary of the over 150 detailed verbatim comments on the grade rationale from its over 40 worldwide acknowledged and highly experienced industry study participants.
Also, to be provided in the presentation, is information on the background of the Report Card including the motivation of this well-respected and frequently referenced annual study’s creation and the process by which it has been conducted. This year’s Report Card is especially poignant since it markedly addressed how Covid has affected the impact of Covid on the Report Card’s grades and provides recommendations and guidance as to how to best mitigate similar effects in the future. The overall grade for 2021 declined to C+ from the previous five-year grade of B- with 13 of the 14 subjects declining by at least one grade and thus demonstrating the significant effect of Covid on the success of MEMS commercialization.
