Gervonta 'Tank' Davis (20-0, 19 KOs) claimed a world championship for the second time in his career by defeating Jesus Cuellar (28-3, 21 KOs) in the 3rd round to capture the WBA Super World super featherweight title last Saturday night. The bout, part of Showtime World Championship Boxing, took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. At just 23 years old, Davis proved to be too young, too big, and too powerful for the 31-year-old Cuellar, the former WBA World featherweight champion. Davis knocked Cuellar down with a precise left to the body in the 2nd round and then secured the victory with two more knockdowns in the 3rd round. Referee Benjy Esteves Jr. stopped the fight at 2:45 of the 3rd round.

This win marks Davis's return as a super featherweight world champion after losing his IBF 130-pound title last August due to a missed weight of 132 pounds in his defense against Francisco Fonseca. Although stripped of the belt, Davis still won the fight by stopping Fonseca in the 8th round. With this recent triumph, Davis now holds the WBA Super World super featherweight title and is eyeing the IBF title next by challenging the winner of the Billy Dib vs. Tevin Farmer bout.

Despite Cuellar's skills, he struggled against Davis throughout the fight. From the beginning, it was clear that Davis had a considerable edge in power, size, and speed. Davis landed a remarkable 49% of his power shots, leaving Cuellar with little chance but to endure the blows and hope Davis would tire. With this loss, Cuellar has now faced setbacks in his last two fights against Davis and Abner Mares, putting his once-promising career in jeopardy. Previously, Cuellar had been nearly unbeatable, with notable victories over fighters like Vic Darchinyan, Jonathan Oquendo, and Ruben Tamayo. These recent defeats highlight how quickly a fighter’s fortunes can shift in boxing. Cuellar’s path to redemption may require targeting less challenging champions in the featherweight or super featherweight divisions.

Reflecting on his win, Davis stated, "I'm focused and it showed because I'm a champ again. There are always bumps in the road when you're striving for success. It's all about how you bounce back, and tonight I demonstrated that I'm a true champion.
