Caleb Plant decisively concluded his grudge match against Anthony Dirrell with a devastating one-punch knockout in the ninth round of their WBC super middleweight title eliminator.

Plant (22-1, 13 KO) delivered what could be the finest punch of his career, first landing a crushing left hook to Dirrell’s body, then following up with a powerful blow to the jaw that instantly knocked Dirrell (34-3-2, 25 KO) out cold. The fight was promptly stopped.

Plant faced backlash for his post-fight behavior, which included a "gravedigger" gesture over the unconscious Dirrell. This was a reaction to Dirrell's pre-fight taunts, such as wearing a shirt that claimed he would be “Plant-ing flowers” on his opponent. While the gesture was certainly provocative, it was motivated by the pre-fight trash talk.

In the aftermath, Plant expressed his goal of defeating everyone else in the 168 lb division and securing a rematch with Canelo Alvarez, who had defeated him in November 2021 to unify the super middleweight titles.

For the 38-year-old Dirrell, this loss might signify the end of his career. Despite showing moments of aggression and trying to disrupt Plant with wrestling and fouling, he was consistently outperformed throughout the fight. Given his impressive career, it may be time for Dirrell to consider retirement, with little left to prove.
