WBC interim welterweight champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (29-2, 19 KOs) secured a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Argentina’s Fabián “TNT” Maidana (22-3, 16 KOs), the younger brother of former world champion Marcos Maidana, in the co-main event of the Canelo-Munguia card on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Maidana came out strong, applying early pressure, while Barrios remained patient, waiting for openings. In the third round, Barrios landed a clean overhand right that sent Maidana to the canvas.

Barrios continued to control the action with his jab and methodically pressured Maidana, landing significant shots by the sixth round. As the fight progressed past the midway point, Barrios appeared to be in command, despite his right eye swelling shut by the eighth round.

In the ninth, Barrios continued to box effectively, though Maidana landed some solid punches. However, Barrios’s superior ring generalship was evident throughout the bout. Although Maidana had his moments, he was largely outboxed as Barrios’s experience and strategy prevailed, leading to a strong finish and a decisive win.

The judges all scored the fight 116-111 in favor of Barrios.
