What is functional fitness?

I've posted each of these on my personal IG and have been told by people that they aren't functional. Dozens of people told me the first one is going to destroy your shoulder and hurt you. Sure, that may be the case if you have a current injury or pain in that motion, but when the shoulder isn't in pain, it isn't unrealistic to move in these motions.

In my opinion, if a joint moves in a range of motion, it is functional to train it in that motion. Everyone will have a different baseline, however, and most people probably shouldn't start by loading these end-ranges. Katie and I have worked for years to strengthen into our end-ranges of motion and be able to load them.
As you can clearly see, these goofy exercises are applicable to life movements. The last one will strengthen shoulder extension and will also help with your pulling and pressing movements, allowing the shoulder to extend farther behind you in the bottom of your pushing exercise or the top of your pulling exercises.

In general, if a motion doesn't hurt during or after you train it, then keep training it. Start with slow reps in a small range of motion, then incorporate an increase in ROM, resistance, reps, and sets over the course of weeks and months.

Obviously, if you are afraid of a range of motion, you aren't ready for it.
