Mel Doebler was born in Detroit in 1925. He enlisted in the Army in March 1944 and was assigned to the 68th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 14th Armored Division, which landed in Marseille, France in October 1944. After dealing with some Germans in the Maritime Alps, they moved north into Alsace. After the war in Europe ended, he returned to the US, serving at Camp Maxey in Texas until discharged in 1946.
