Albert Burckard Jr. was born in Norfolk Virginia in 1945. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and received his commission as an Army officer in 1967. After an initial assignment in Germany, he went to Vietnam in 1969, starting as a staff officer with the 101st Airborne Division, then serving as commander of A Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment during the early stages of the Ripcord campaign in 1970, then took another staff position. After Vietnam, he remained in the Army, serving additional tours in Germany and South Korea, and retired in 1993 as a lieutenant colonel.
