Carrie Hudenko was born in 1963 and grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She enlisted in the Army straight out of high school in 1982. She took military police training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and was then stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. There she immediately encountered sexual harassment and found that the Army was not yet ready to accommodate female personnel in specializations previously reserved for men. Conditions were even worse when she was sent to Europe for Reforger operations, in which US and NATO forces trained together. She eventually took an assignment to Inchon, Korea, for a year, where she had duties ranging from arresting soldiers in off-limits areas off base to manning outposts on the Demilitarized Zone. She later returned to Fort Dix, and completed her enlistment with a Michigan National Guard unit in 1988.
