Stephen Marvin Nagelkerke, better known as Marv, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1928. Just before his eighteenth birthday, he received a draft notice, and on the advice of his brother, who had just returned home from long service in the Army, he enlisted in the Navy. After a very short training period at Camp Perry, Virginia, he was sent to California and shipped out on a freighter filled with Navy recruits headed for Guam. There he joined the aircraft carrier USS Antietam, and sailed to other islands in the Marianas and to Manila in the Philippines. After returning to San Francisco to refit, the ship went to Australia, China and Japan before returning home. He was discharged two months early, as the Navy was downsizing after World War II, and returned to the Grand Rapids area, where he has lived ever since.
