Mel Doebler was born in Detroit in 1925. He enlisted in the Army in March 1944 and was assigned to the 68th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 14th Armored Division, which landed in Marseille, France in October 1944. After dealing with some Germans in the Maritime Alps, they moved north into Alsace. In his interview, he talks about fighting during the Battle of the Bulge, but his division was not directly involved in that campaign, but replaced elements of the 3rd Army that were, and helped fight off the secondary German attack that started Jan. 1 1945, Operation Nordwind. After the war in Europe ended, he returned to the US, serving at Camp Maxey in Texas until discharged in 1946. While the dates and places here are sketchy, Mel tells a number of good stories, including one involving Gen. Patton.
