Jerry Kloostra
Jerry Kloostra was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1940, and enlisted in the Navy in 1958. His brother was already in, and serving on the aircraft carrier USS Randolph as a quartermaster, which enabled Jerry to get assigned to the same ship in the same capacity, even though his brother's tour ended before he arrived. His ship had been recently converted to a submarine chaser, and spent its time at sea practicing submarine hunting in exercises with American submarines. During his time on the ship, he did mostly communications work behind the bridge, but also qualified as a master helmsman. He completed his active duty service in 1960.
