Before there was Bonnevile, the beach at Daytona, Florida ruled the speed challenge world. Every year hundreds of cars and thousands of spectators swarmed the quiet beach town to see who was the fastest on four wheels. In 1957 one driver showed how dangerous this could be. One of our viewers, Christopher Ball told us who the unlucky driver is in this footage.
Which helped me track down the story in the Chicago Tribune. The Trib said Chicago resident Bill Norkett was badly injured and bruised when his sports car hurtled end over end and burst into flames. He was in the American sports car, a 1955 Thunderbird and was running an estimated 130 miles an hour when he hit the trap (a timing device).
Norkett was held in his car by his safety strap and cut loose by Deputy Sheriff Walter Braren.
