Il palio di Legnano è una festa tradizionale che si svolge ogni anno a Legnano dal 1935 per commemorare l'omonima battaglia combattuta il 29 maggio 1176 nei dintorni della città tra le truppe della Lega Lombarda e l'esercito imperiale di Federico Barbarossa. Il territorio di Legnano è diviso in otto contrade storiche che si sfidano, all'ultima domenica di maggio, in una corsa ippica che chiude la manifestazione.
Fino al 2005 il palio di Legnano era chiamato "Sagra del Carroccio", denominazione che prese già dalla sua seconda edizione, nel 1936. Dal 1954 è ufficialmente annoverato tra le manifestazioni storiche italiane[. Tra gli eventi collegati al palio di Legnano trovano spazio la sfilata storica (oggetto di questo video) e "La Fabbrica del Canto", manifestazione musicale corale internazionale nata nel 1992 su iniziativa dell'Associazione Musicale Jubilate.
La sfilata storica
Nel pomeriggio del giorno del palio per le strade della città si tiene una sfilata storica che è formata da più di 200 cavalli e 1.000 figuranti in costume medievale i cui abiti, scudi, armi, ecc., rispecchiano scrupolosamente quelli del XII secolo. Le contrade, la cui iscrizione alla corsa ippica è facoltativa, sono invece obbligate a partecipare alla sfilata ippica con un numero massimo di centodieci figuranti e di sedici cavalli. Tutti i cavalli impiegati nella sfilata sono condotti a mano da esperti palafrenieri.
La sfilata inizia con i cortei delle singole contrade, che dal proprio maniero si dirigono nel centro della città per la sfilata vera e propria. Quest'ultima si apre con un corteo formato dalle bande musicali delle municipalità un tempo coalizzate nella Lega Lombarda. I loro componenti indossano la divisa del corpo musicale d'appartenenza e portano il gonfalone del proprio comune (quello di Legnano chiude questa parte del corteo). Il tipo di musica suonata è di carattere militare.
La parte centrale della sfilata è costituita da figuranti provenienti dalle contrade che sono vestiti in abiti medioevali. Ogni rione storico sfila seguendo un tema preciso; la contrada che chiude questa parte del corteo è quella che ha vinto il palio dell'anno precedente.

The palio di Legnano is a traditional festival that has been held annually in Legnano since 1935 to commemorate the battle of the same name fought on 29 May 1176 in the surroundings of the city between the troops of the Lombard League and the imperial army of Federico Barbarossa. The territory of Legnano is divided into eight historic districts that compete, on the last Sunday of May, in a horse race that closes the event.
Until 2005, the Palio di Legnano was called the "Sagra del Carroccio", a name it already took from its second edition, in 1936. Since 1954 it has officially been counted among the historic Italian events[. Among the events connected to the Palio di Legnano, there is also the historical parade (subject of this video) and "La Fabbrica del Canto", an international choral musical event born in 1992 on the initiative of the Jubilate Musical Association. In 2002, the historical parade of the Palio di Legnano was revived at Columbus Day in New York.
The historic parade
In the afternoon of the day of the palio, a historical parade is held along the streets of the city which is made up of more than 200 horses and 1,000 people in medieval costume whose clothes, shields, weapons, etc., scrupulously reflect those of the 12th century. The districts, whose registration for the horse race is optional, are instead obliged to participate in the horse parade with a maximum number of one hundred and ten participants and sixteen horses. All the horses used in the parade are led by hand by expert groomers.
The parade begins with the processions of the individual districts, which from their manor head to the city center for the actual parade. The latter opens with a procession formed by the musical bands of the municipalities once united in the Lega Lombarda. Their members wear the uniform of the musical corps they belong to and carry the banner of their municipality (that of Legnano closes this part of the procession). The type of music played is military in nature.
The central part of the parade is made up of figures from the districts who are dressed in medieval clothes. Each historic district parades following a precise theme; the contrada that closes this part of the procession is the one that won the palio of the previous year.
