"King of the Khyber Rifles" - Main Title & Finale - Bernard Herrmann composer / conductor
Bernard Herrmann was one of the finest composers to come out of Hollywood, with his scores for such films as "Citizen Kane" and "The Magnificent Ambersons," all the way through to "Psycho", "Vertigo" and "North by North West," being among the most memorable ever written. One of his many other scores was for an early CinemaScope production of 1953 entitled "King of the Khyber Rifles." This starred Tyrone Power and was set in 1850s India during the British rule, depicting the conflicts between British legionnaires and the Indian natives. Herrmann's rousing title music promises action and thrills of which unfortunately there are very few in the actual film. Still, most of his movie title sequences are well worth a listen, so here is one of them!
Another Herrmann score from the same period was for "The Egyptian" which he jointly composed with Alfred Newman. The studio didn't give Newman enough time to score the lengthy movie on his own, so Herrmann helped him out.
