The most common coloration of peppered moths (Biston betularia) changed with the onset of the industrial revolution.

Before 1850, the peppered moths most often captured by collectors were light in color.

Their pale gray coloration resembled the lichen-covered tree trunks on which they rested during the day.

In the 1850s, the English industrial revolution got under way and sooty smoke began to blanket the countryside.

Soot and other pollutants killed lichens and darkened tree trunks.

Collectors found that dark-colored moths were now captured more frequently.

The collectors hypothesized that conditions had previously favored light moths but now favored the dark ones.

Directional selection had shifted the range of variation for moth wing color.
