General life cycle of the periodical cicadas (Magicicada) of the eastern United States.

Adult periodical cicadas are winged insects that lay eggs on trees.

Nymphs live and feed underground for years before emerging for one final molt to adulthood.

There are six species of Magicicada.

Three of these species differ in size, color, and song, but they all spend 17 years underground as nymphs.

Each of these species has a "sibling species" that looks and sounds like it, but that emerges every 13 years.

This graphic shows the emergence patterns for two sibling species of Magicicada.

Only once every 221 years do these two sibling species release gametes in the same year.

This temporal isolation prevents gene flow between the two otherwise similar species.
