Jamuary #24 - Water worlds (ft Eurorack, Octatrack)
Today's Jam is based off a single idea ...I was thinking about the idea of water droplets landing on strings, and the sound they might make.
This led to the idea to make a track where the sound entirely came from water droplets. so... get a whole load of samples of water droplets, thewn use them as 'exciters' in various ways within eurorack.
Rample plays the samples, its good at this since it can play 4 different samples, and each 'track' can use random samples, for variation. (I had 6 on each 'part')
Part 1 - percussive - Ripples, use the droplet to excite the filter
Part 2 - percussive - uVCF, again, use the droplet to excite the filter
Part 3 - melodic - use Rings as a resonator with droplet as exciter
Part 4 - melodic - use Elements as a resonator with droplet as exciter
Then bring all into the Octatrack to mix, and apply a little bit of FX, a bit of filtering and a bit of reverb, and a touch of delay.
The basic idea works pretty world....
but I have to admit, it took a bit more time that expected!
prepping samples, working out how to process.
e.g. I a tried granular sampling, but really could find a way to do this 'live' in a repeatable way... so had to abort that.
then I hit a few isssues...
the sounds all tended to clash or merge into one ...hard to get contrast, and conherent - I think fundamentally, the issue is all the sound sources are pretty resonant.
eventually, I managed to find a place for the 4 parts - but by then, Id really run out of time.... so didnt really notice the melodic sequence were a bitt too repetitve , and Id didn't really have the movement I need to create the variation.
I still think it was an interesting idea, just not one with enough depth for entire track (at least without a lot more work?!)
but, I think I'd still use the idea for an interesting backing part along with some other sounds, as it does create some interesting sounds.
at the end of the day, for me , Jamuary is about exploring ideas, so it was a success in that regard.
