Although born in London of Polish-Irish ancestry, it was in America that Leopold Stokowski achieved world-wide fame as one of the 20th Century's greatest conductors. His career was not without controversy but there is little doubt that his appearance in Walt Disney's "Fantasia" brought classical music to a great many cinema-goers who might otherwise have never heard it. Prior to that, he appeared in "The Big Broadcast of 1937" conducting two of his Bach transcriptions - "Ein feste Burg" and the "Little Fugue" in G minor. Stokowski abandoned using the baton in the 1920s and became famous for the expressiveness of his hands, as is well illustrated in this clip.
