Kubuntu 18.04, Nvidia NVENC, SimpleScreenRecorder
By using Nvidia's h264_nvenc encoder when screen recording, most of the encoding is offloaded on to the GPU. Using hardware h264 encoding makes it possible to screen record 60FPS at much higher resolutions (I was able to easily record 2560x1440 at 60FPS), or to screen record game play smoothly.
The AMD equivalent to Nvidia's h264_nvenc is h264_amf. Unfortunately, while this is available to Windows users with FFMPEG 4+, it's not yet available on Linux.
