Are you an instructional designer exploring LXD? Find out how to use learner personas to design better learning experiences and training!

In Part 2 of 3 of this LXD Mini-Series, I explain some of the downfalls of relying on stakeholders to provide information about our learners during the Intake process.

Often, stakeholders just see learners as employees. But LXDs understand that these learners are people! They have lives outside of work and lived experiences that are going to greatly affect how they show up to take our courses.

By creating learner personas and assigning a persona to represent an entire learner group, we can build empathy—the first step in design thinking—to really put ourselves in their shoes. Once we understand more about who they are as people (not just employees!), we can consider that as we move to define our project goal and begin to brainstorm solutions to our problems.

NOTE: This is part of a recorded webinar I presented earlier this year. While I do believe my design background, UX training, and 9 years of ID/LXD experience makes me qualified to weigh in on this topic... please understand that these are just my own opinions. YMMV.

Regardless, creating personas whenever we're designing anything—be it a course, training, program, process, or product—will help us understand our end-user more to be able to better create experiences that truly meet their needs.
