Phonons and rotons are elementary excitations which behave as Quasi Particles. As photons are the quantum of electromagnetic wave, phonons are the quantum of sound wave. Rotons play a crucial role in discussing the superfluid behavior of liquid helium. Phonons and Rotons both are bosons. A solid may be regarded as a gas of non interacting phonons, which is a spineless particle with definite energy and momentum.
