I like to keep these things as one continuous take, so despite the numerous dissolves nothing has been cut out or altered (though it was tempting to take out the spinning Chinese cymbal on the snare drum - ha ha). This is the 2nd of 6 takes, which I think is the best of the afternoon.
DF no.297    • DF no.297-White Ghost vintage/antique...   is the 5th take.
This unique 'hand-spun' cymbal that some previous owner has written 'UFO' on in marker pen was going cheap on TradeMe (NZ's version of eBay) and I couldn't resist! Obviously it's not a conventional cymbal form - it's basically a cone. It's very trashy-sounding and better with mallets than sticks.
Miking the kit with a very cheap condenser mic hung overhead on a light fitting and plugged into one of two Nikon DSLR cameras. Most of the sound is two older model Tascam field recorders, one each side about 1.5m in front of the kit. Apart from a lack of really low frequencies (you have to be in the room to feel these large bass drums with your body as much as hear them) the kit sounds here quite like how it does in the room.
There are notes elsewhere on the rest of the drums in this kit (search this channel for White Ghost), which are mostly Premier or at least English-made, with some being around 90+ years old, and with calf heads.
