Dr. Rajeev Vijayakumar, the Head of Department and Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology, Hemato-Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant at Gleneagles BGS Hospital in Kengeri, Bengaluru, clarifies common misconceptions about bone marrow transplants. When patients with myeloma, lymphoma, or leukemia hear about bone marrow transplantation, they often feel overwhelmed and fear that the procedure involves removing their bone and replacing it with someone else's. Dr. Vijayakumar reassures them that this is not the case.
He explains that the procedure involves harvesting the patient's own healthy bone marrow cells, storing them, and then using high-dose chemotherapy to clear out the diseased bone marrow. After this process, the previously harvested healthy cells are reintroduced into the patient’s body. These cells home back to the bone marrow. Within about twelve days, new healthy cells begin to regenerate, free of cancer.
