Dare to be different I say, like much in life the only way to learn through cinematography is to try and fail. Many of the shots that you see in this short video are experimental and that's what I love about them. They aren't perfectly in-focus or as clinically sharp as possible and some of the shots don't even make a lot of sense. But that's the whole idea, that's what gives the images character and that surreal, dream-like quality. It's the sequence of images combined that create a story which evokes the feeling of being by the sea!
I shot this entirely hand-held with a rare vintage lens from the 1970's to achieve the unique look. You'll notice the unreal bubble bokeh, texture of light and dreamy blooming effects, and these are the elements that make the footage look so different. Even after many years of filming I'm still finding my own style, and learning to express what I'm feeling through my own cinematography. If there's no emotion, feeling or expression through the images we create, then it's truly just a flat, lifeless image!
These images are also special because they are memories of joyful moments spent together with my wife! It's been a very difficult past month with my wife going through cancer, but I'm reminded that I am blessed to have a loving wife who is being looked after by a God who loves us! I'm grateful and hopeful for the future, all that I have is thanks to God's grace!
